HILLSBORO, TEXAS—Hill College Police Academy has graduated three new cadets from their program. Each of these students completed the program and took their state test on May 28, 2020. All three cadets passed and now can move forward with their police careers. One of the cadets has been employed by McLennan County during his coursework at Hill College and will move from jailer status to deputy. The other two cadets that graduated are eligible for hire by local police departments or sheriff offices.

“To say I'm proud of our recent academy group is an understatement. These men worked hard, were patient through the COVID slow-down, and showed a level of professionalism we need in the police profession,” says Police Academy Coordinator Mike Hughes.

The police academy at Hill College covers law, arrest mechanics, emergency driving, medical skills, firearms, de-escalation strategies, communication, and a host of other topics. The academy has now graduated three groups of cadets and maintained a 100% pass rate on the state licensing exam on the first attempt through all classes of cadets. The state exam is administered online and proctored in the Hill College Testing Center. It consists of 250 questions from throughout the course curriculum. The state exam is a demanding, three-hour test that requires hours of preparation in and out of the classroom.

Enrollment is open for the next academy which begins August 24. Hill College’s Police Academy has a mission to provide training and testing that ensures each student graduates with the demonstrated character, knowledge, problem-solving abilities, human relations, communication and physical skills necessary to meet the professional standards required of a peace officer.
